Bio

Rebecka Sofia Ahvenniemi (Ph.D.) is a writer, researcher, and critical theorist. Drawing on backgrounds in philosophy, music composition, and psychology, she examines how cultural norms, institutions, and ideas shape human behaviour and public life.

Rebecka studied at the University of Bergen, the University of Helsinki, Freie Universität Berlin, and Columbia University. She completed her Ph.D. in philosophy in 2021 and is completing a second doctoral degree in music composition. She has taught philosophy, academic writing, and music composition at the University of Bergen, the Grieg Academy, and the Norwegian Academy of Music.

Alongside her academic work, Rebecka has been active as an internationally performed composer, receiving commissions from leading ensembles and festivals. She has also held several leadership positions in the cultural sector, including serving on the board of Arts Council Norway, chairing the committee for Touring and Operational Support, serving on the board of the Norwegian Society of Composers, and chairing the concert series Avgarde.

Today, Rebecka works across disciplinary boundaries, bringing together philosophy, psychology, artistic practice, and institutional experience to develop critical perspectives on culture and society. Her work includes writing, research, public speaking, and educational content, with a particular interest in the relationship between individual behaviour, social norms, and cultural institutions.
